Papers of Seba Smith [manuscript], 1838-1851.

The papers contain a satirical manuscript in the form of a Major Jack Downing letter to the editor of the "Leveller." In letters Smith submits an article to "Graham's Magazine," and mentions another article, "A race for a sweetheart"; recommends George W. Chase, a young lawyer moving west; and discusses the indebtedness of Francis O. J. Smith of Portland, Maine, which he agrees to settle for three hundred dollars. Correspondents include George Rex Graham and Francis O. J. Smith.
